Developing a comprehensive code of conduct for a fire fighting organisation is essential to ensure professionalism, safety, and integrity among its members. The code should embody the values, ethics, and principles that guide the organisation’s mission of protecting lives and property.

When creating a code of conduct for the South Australian Country Fire Service, we sought to outline expectations for behavior and conduct both on and off duty. We chose to emphasise respect, teamwork, and accountability, fostering a culture of mutual support and camaraderie within the organization.

Key elements to include in the code of conduct are guidelines for professional behavior, adherence to safety protocols, and compliance with laws and regulations. We also chose to emphasise the importance of integrity, honesty, and ethical decision-making in all interactions, whether dealing with colleagues, the public, or other stakeholders.

Clear policies regarding conflicts of interest, confidentiality, and use of organisational resources should be articulated to prevent potential misconduct and maintain public trust. Additionally, the code should address disciplinary procedures and consequences for violations, ensuring accountability and fairness in enforcement.
